Sustainability built into the product, not bolted on afterwards

The environmental cost of a pack of concentrate is largely fixed before it ships — by the energy that made it and the volume that has to travel. That is where we work: manufacture powered primarily by solar, dry concentrate systems that cut freight, and packaging and ordering planned around what a unit actually uses. We say plainly where we are still building.

Manufacture powered mainly by solar

The largest share of the emissions in a pack of concentrate is created before it ever reaches the United Kingdom — in the energy used to manufacture it. Production at our manufacturing partner’s facility runs primarily on solar power.

That matters more than anything a distributor can do downstream. It means the products we bring into the UK start from a lower base, and it is one of the reasons we chose the manufacturing relationship we did.

    Dry concentrate systems ship the same number of treatments in a fraction of the volume and weight of liquid concentrate, cutting freight, fuel and storage requirements.

  • Responsible sourcing

    We select manufacturing partners with certified quality and environmental management systems, and clear expectations of their own suppliers.

  • Supply-chain efficiency

    Orders and deliveries are planned around treatment volumes, reducing unnecessary movement of goods and waste from over-supply.

  • Packaging reduction

    We work with manufacturers and customers to reduce and better specify packaging across the range we supply.

  • Responsible waste management

    Waste arising from our own operations is handled responsibly and in line with UK requirements.

  • Digital documentation

    Technical files, safety data sheets and delivery documentation are supplied digitally wherever our customers accept it.

  • Working towards net zero

    We are building a carbon reduction plan for our own operations and the supply chain that serves them, aligned with the UK government's net zero target.

Dry concentrate

The largest single saving available in this category

Liquid concentrate is mostly water, and moving water across continents is expensive in both cost and carbon. Dry concentrate systems carry the same number of treatments in a fraction of the volume and weight.

Where a service is able to move to a dry format, it is the most substantial environmental improvement available in this category — and it generally reduces cost at the same time.

Liquid concentrate is mostly water. Shipping the concentrate dry moves the same number of treatments in a fraction of the volume and weight — fewer containers, fewer road miles per treatment and less storage at the unit. The liquid comparison is indicative; exact figures depend on the presentation.

Net zero

Committed to net zero, in line with the UK government's target

We are working towards net zero across our own operations and the supply chain that serves them, aligned with the United Kingdom's statutory target. We will report against it as the business grows.

Carbon reduction

Building our carbon reduction plan

EZLAH is developing a Carbon Reduction Plan covering the emissions arising from our own operations and, so far as we are able to measure them, those in the supply chain that serves us. It will set out where our emissions come from, the actions we are taking to reduce them and how progress will be reported.

We would rather publish a plan we can stand behind than a headline figure we cannot. The plan will be published on this page once it is complete, and updated as it is reviewed.

We do not describe EZLAH as carbon neutral or zero waste. Net zero is stated here as a commitment we are working towards, not an achievement.

Social value

A lifelong commitment to uplifting communities

Sustainability is not only environmental. A supply chain reaches from the people who make these products to the patients whose treatment depends on them arriving.

  • Access to treatment

    Haemodialysis is life-sustaining and cannot be paused. Dependable supply is the most direct contribution a distributor can make to the communities a renal service looks after.

  • Fair work in the supply chain

    We expect the manufacturers we work with to uphold labour standards, worker welfare and safe conditions, and to evidence how they do so.

  • Skills and local employment

    As EZLAH grows we intend to recruit and train locally, building the operational skills the business needs rather than buying them in short term.

  • A long-term view

    We measure the business in years rather than quarters, which is what allows commitments like these to mean anything.
